How WASH and school investments reached thousands of learners
Challenge
In the Amhara and Oromia regions, thousands of students lacked access to clean water and sanitation facilities, contributing to high dropout rates, particularly among girls.
Funding & Approach
EDTF pooled diaspora contributions and partnered with local NGOs and government education offices to construct WASH facilities (water, sanitation, and hygiene) at 12 schools.
How It Works
Each facility was designed with community input, built by local contractors, and is maintained by school committees trained by EDTF partners. Every school now has separate latrines for boys and girls, handwashing stations, and reliable water supply.
Results
Dropout rates fell 22% in the first year. Girls' attendance rose 35%. Teachers reported students' health improved dramatically, leading to better classroom participation and test scores.
“For the first time, our daughters want to stay in school. This changed everything.”

Legacy Builders and Young Innovators building Ethiopia’s next economy
Challenge
Ethiopia's young innovators have talent and drive but lack access to early-stage capital, mentorship, and market networks, forcing many to look abroad.
Funding & Approach
The Great Rift Valley Innovation Summit and Accelerator sourced, de-risked, and supported 18 companies across healthcare, education, and agriculture — including growth-stage Legacy Builders and early-stage Young Innovators.
How It Works
Each venture received platform support, mentorship, and access to EDTF's diaspora network for business development — a repeatable framework for translating early innovation into measurable outcomes.
Results
In its inaugural cycle the platform accelerated 18 companies. Legacy Builders like Life Line Addis and GlobeDock Academy showed measurable growth in service volume, revenue, and team capacity after GRV support.
“EDTF believed in us before anyone else did. That capital wasn't just money; it was confidence.”

$1.67M+ in medical relief and mobility for communities in need
Challenge
Communities affected by the pandemic and by conflict in Northern Ethiopia needed lifesaving PPE, medical supplies, and mobility support — fast and with trust on the ground.
Funding & Approach
EDTF's Medical Relief Fund (evolved from the COVID response account) procured PPE with Ministry of Health collaboration, launched a $500,000 matching campaign, and partnered to deliver wheelchairs for dignity and independence.
How It Works
Procurement prioritized speed (delivery within 20–25 days) and local logistics — including duty-free clearance for wheelchair containers through Modjo dry port with EDTF Atlanta chapter support.
Results
More than $1.67M in medical relief funded, 4.6M+ PPE and supply units procured, and ~390 wheelchairs delivered for persons with leg disabilities across Ethiopia.
“Mobility is dignity. Restoring it is what diaspora partnership looks like in practice.”
