How a $120k investment reached 8,955 students
Challenge
In the Amhara and Oromia regions, thousands of students lacked access to clean water and sanitation facilities, contributing to high dropout rates — particularly among girls.
Funding & Approach
EDTF pooled diaspora contributions and partnered with local NGOs and government education offices to construct WASH facilities (water, sanitation, and hygiene) at 12 schools.
How It Works
Each facility was designed with community input, built by local contractors, and is maintained by school committees trained by EDTF partners. Every school now has separate latrines for boys and girls, handwashing stations, and reliable water supply.
Results
Dropout rates fell 22% in the first year. Girls' attendance rose 35%. Teachers reported students' health improved dramatically, leading to better classroom participation and test scores.

Challenge
Ethiopia's young innovators have talent and drive but lack access to early-stage capital, mentorship, and market networks — forcing many to look abroad.
Funding & Approach
Through the Innovation & GRV Fund, EDTF invested $750k in 6 Ethiopian-led startups across agritech, health tech, and clean energy, complemented by mentorship from diaspora professionals.
How It Works
Each startup received seed funding, a 12-month mentorship plan, and access to EDTF's global diaspora network for business development and follow-on funding.
Results
Combined, the 6 startups have created over 140 jobs, serve 15,000+ customers, and collectively raised $1.2M in follow-on investment from external funders.

Challenge
The conflict in northern Ethiopia displaced millions. Families needed food, shelter, and medical supplies immediately — and official aid channels moved too slowly.
Funding & Approach
EDTF activated its emergency relief pipeline, mobilizing diaspora donations and partnering with Ethiopian Red Cross and local responders to deliver supplies within 72 hours.
How It Works
Contributions were directed to pre-vetted local partners who purchased supplies domestically — avoiding import delays — and distributed them through existing community networks.
Results
28 tons of food, hygiene kits, and medical supplies reached 32,000 displaced families. EDTF's transparency dashboard allowed donors to track shipments in near-real-time.
